My Gear

Here is a short and consolidated list of some of the major gear and supplies I decided to take with me. I will add more commentary and reviews to each item after some time and use.

A Canon PowerShot Elph 110 HS digital camera with a Lowepro Santiago 20 case. The camera has an aluminum body which makes it feel nice and sturdy. It managed to withstand several falls onto hard surfaces with only cosmetic damage as far as I can tell.

A Mountain Equipment Co-op Cragalot overnight pack. This is the standard no frills backpack that MEC offers in this size range. It felt like a perfect fit once I had it loaded up with weight and properly adjusted the straps. It’s a very durable pack, which makes it no surprise I saw plenty of other Canadians with the exact same one.

A MEC Aquanator rain jacket. This was another well fitting item, and it is very light weight. It also has fully taped seams and served its purpose well the few times I really needed it.

Outdoor research ultralight compression sacks. I’ve used one of these on my Rocky Mountains worthy sleeping bag for a few years now, and it is pretty much indestructible. I bought a second smaller one for a light blanket. The big one was used for my clothing.

A trusty old sling pack I’ve had for years. It was used as a day pack for when I wasn’t moving between cities, and it continued to serve me well in that regard.

My ancient Thinkpad laptop that I’ve had since I started university. It’s not the smallest or lightest computer around, but it is tough and survived my adventure. A lighter netbook style of computer probably would have been a better choice, but netbooks seem to be a thing of the past, and the extra few pounds in my bag weren’t that bad.

  1. You might consider a decent Pelican Case. One that size will run you about 30 bucks. Of course you can always use a sandwich size Ziploc freezer bag. I’ve used them on various deployments and they never fail me.
